We initiated self-help groups under the guidance of Suvarna Gokhale, Secretary, Jnana Prabodhini – Solapur with the aim that women should come together to save money collectively, with the idea of using the savings for business ventures and becoming self-reliant. Currently, there are seven savings groups in operation. Each group consists of 10 to 20 members, totalling 122 women participants. Each woman saves Rs. 200 per month. Many of these women take loans for medical expenses and their children's education. They say, "The savings group provides us with a strong financial foundation. We receive money at lower interest rates in times of emergencies. If we go to a money lender, they charge 5 % interest, but here we only pay 2% of the interest. The accumulated interest is distributed among all members of the group at the end of the year. These savings groups' accounts are audited by Asha Surve, the coordinator of the savings groups in Pune.
